The Other Dearborn
A Post-Graduate Thesis Short Film
Writer - Director - Producer
Jacob W. Novak
Creating this film was the culmination of my academic career. Jason, Our protagonist is a student on a college film set trying to live in the shadow of his brother’s legacy. When things start to go wrong, setting things right is up to him and the people around him.
“The Other Dearborn” is a sequel to a short film I made with my colleagues two years prior titled “Dearborn”. The first Dearborn told a story of a dysfunctional college film set. The entire process forced us as young filmmakers to reflect on our own experiences as much as possible and bring them into our work on that film. Returning to the story in this sequel was extremely artistically rewarding. As a writer and director, I’m always looking for the core of the story I’m telling. Finding the real heart of a theme, a person, or a fictional character is something I passionately seek out. Finding the heart of Jason and his classmates in this film was a fantastic experience. Collaborating with the actors on their portrayals of characters we were making together was eye-opening. Meticulously planning every shot, lighting setup, and action required organization, team work, and know-how. I’m so proud of the work me and my team accomplished and I can’t wait to keep doing more.
